India — A Global Stainless Steel Supplier
India ranks among the world's top three stainless steel producers — behind China and ahead of Japan in certain product categories. India's stainless steel industry has undergone significant capacity expansion over the past decade, with major integrated mills now producing flat-rolled products, long products and tubular products that meet international standards including ASTM, EN, JIS and DIN.
Indian stainless steel exports reach buyers in the United States, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, South Korea, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Germany, Kenya and throughout Southeast Asia. The competitive advantage is clear — India offers certified quality at 15 to 25 percent lower pricing than European and Japanese equivalents for the same grade and specification, with full documentation including Mill Test Certificates and third-party inspection.
For global buyers — fabricators, distributors, OEMs, project procurement teams and trading companies — sourcing stainless steel from India through a verified supplier with complete documentation eliminates the quality and compliance risk that often accompanies lower-cost alternatives.
Grade Comparison — SS 202, SS 304 and SS 316
Selecting the correct grade is the most critical sourcing decision for stainless steel buyers. Over-specifying costs money. Under-specifying leads to premature corrosion failure, warranty claims and liability. Here is the full comparison:
The key differentiator between SS 304 and SS 316 is the molybdenum content in SS 316 — this addition dramatically improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting corrosion. For any application near saltwater, in humid coastal environments or involving chloride-containing chemicals, SS 316 is the technically correct specification. Substituting SS 304 in such environments leads to premature failure.
Forms Available for Export
All grades — SS 202, SS 304/304L and SS 316/316L — are available in five primary forms from Zenvico Global. Each form has specific HS codes, standards and typical buyer applications:
Mill Test Certificate — The Critical Quality Document
A Mill Test Certificate (MTC) — also called a Material Test Report (MTR) — is the single most important quality document for any stainless steel purchase. It is issued by the steel mill and confirms that the material supplied meets the chemical composition and mechanical properties required by the applicable standard. Every heat of stainless steel produced has a unique heat number — the MTC traces that heat number to the specific coil, sheet or pipe you receive.
Never accept stainless steel without a matching MTC. A supplier unable to provide an MTC is either selling substandard material, substituting a lower grade, or has lost traceability — all of which create liability for the buyer in end-use applications.
Zenvico Global provides original Mill Test Certificates with every stainless steel shipment. For European buyers requiring pressure equipment compliance under PED 2014/68/EU, EN 10204 3.1 certified MTCs signed by an independent inspector are available on request. Third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek is also available for all shipments.
Export Markets & Specific Requirements
Each major import market for stainless steel from India has specific documentation, standard and compliance requirements:
- United States — ASTM standards apply (A240 for sheets, A312 for pipes, A276 for bars). Section 232 steel tariffs apply — Indian stainless steel currently subject to a 25% tariff unless a quota exemption has been granted. Buyers must factor this into landed cost calculations. MTC required by most end-users. Country of origin marking mandatory on all products.
- European Union — EN standards apply (EN 10088 for flat-rolled, EN 10216-5 for seamless pipes, EN 10217-7 for welded pipes). EN 10204 3.1 MTC required for pressure vessel and structural applications under PED 2014/68/EU and CE marking requirements. Anti-dumping duties may apply on certain stainless steel products — verify current EU trade measures before ordering.
- Middle East & Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar) — High demand for SS 304 in construction, food service and water treatment. SS 316 preferred for desalination and coastal infrastructure. SASO certification required for Saudi Arabia. No anti-dumping duties — competitive landed cost advantage for Indian material.
- Southeast Asia (Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia) — Strong demand for flat-rolled stainless steel coils for downstream processing. JIS standards acceptable alongside ASTM. Vietnam is a major destination for Indian stainless steel for further fabrication and export. Competitive pricing against Chinese origin material.
- United Kingdom — Post-Brexit, the UK maintains its own steel safeguard measures. EN standards apply. EN 10204 3.1 MTC required for structural and pressure applications. Growing demand for SS 316 in offshore, marine and pharmaceutical construction.
