Silicon Manganese in Steelmaking
Silicon Manganese is the most widely used ferro alloy in global steelmaking by volume. It provides both manganese and silicon additions to liquid steel in a single combined alloy, reducing the number of separate alloy additions, minimising slag generation and improving recovery efficiency compared to adding FeMn and FeSi separately.
SiMn 6517 (Mn 65%, Si 17%) is the standard commercial grade used in structural steel, wire rod, plate, coil and long product manufacturing worldwide. The manganese content provides strength, hardness and notch toughness improvements while the silicon acts as a powerful deoxidiser, removing dissolved oxygen and improving steel cleanliness.
India's SiMn Production Base
Odisha is India's dominant silicon manganese production state, home to several large submerged arc furnace complexes that produce SiMn continuously. The state's advantages include proximity to manganese ore, coal and coke availability, and direct rail and road access to Paradip port for bulk export loading.
Indian SiMn is exported in significant volumes to South Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Vietnamese steel mills, as well as Middle Eastern and European steel producers. The consistent chemical specification, competitive pricing and reliable supply from Odisha producers have made India a key SiMn supply origin.
Higher Grades Available
Beyond standard SiMn 6517, higher grades are available: SiMn 6520 (Si 20% min) for applications requiring higher silicon recovery, SiMn 7218 (Mn 72%, Si 18%) for premium manganese and silicon requirements, and custom specifications on long-term supply contracts.
