Ferromanganese in Steelmaking
Ferromanganese is one of the oldest and most essential ferro alloys in steel production. It serves three critical functions: deoxidation (removing dissolved oxygen from liquid steel), desulphurisation (combining with sulphur to form MnS which floats to slag rather than remaining in steel as harmful FeS), and alloying (manganese improves strength, hardness and wear resistance in structural steels).
High Carbon FeMn with 65-80% Mn and 6-8% carbon is used in the initial stages of steelmaking in electric arc furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces where carbon content can subsequently be removed. It is the most cost-effective manganese addition for bulk steel production applications.
India's Ferromanganese Production
India is a significant producer of ferromanganese, with Odisha and Chhattisgarh states being the primary production hubs due to their proximity to manganese ore deposits and coastal location enabling easy raw material logistics.
Indian HC FeMn is exported to steel mills in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Germany, Turkey, UAE and Egypt. The combination of competitive pricing, regular vessel loading from Paradip, Visakhapatnam and Mundra ports, and the availability of SGS third-party inspection has established India as a reliable ferromanganese supply origin.
Size Fractions and Applications
Standard 10-100mm lump is suitable for furnace top-charging in electric arc furnaces. Smaller fractions (10-50mm) are preferred for ladle metallurgy additions. Fine material (0-10mm fines) is available for briquetting or sintering applications at lower pricing.
