Why Medium Carbon FeMn is Specified
Medium Carbon Ferromanganese fills the specification gap between High Carbon FeMn (6-8% C) and Low Carbon FeMn (0.5% C max). It is specified when the steel grade requires higher manganese content while still maintaining control of residual carbon at a lower cost premium than LC FeMn.
MC FeMn is produced through a selective reduction process in submerged arc furnaces, achieving the intermediate carbon level by carefully controlling the ore-to-coke ratio and tapping temperature. The resulting alloy provides a practical solution for medium and high-manganese steel grades including rail steel, wear-resistant plates, austenitic manganese (Hadfield) steel and certain stainless steel grades.
Applications in High-Grade Steel Production
Rail Steel — Manganese steel rails (1.0-1.5% Mn) require controlled carbon additions where HC FeMn would overshoot the specification.
Structural Steel Grades — Higher-strength structural grades (S355, S420, S460) with Mn 1.4-1.7% and carbon limits below 0.20% benefit from MC FeMn additions.
Austenitic Manganese Steel (Hadfield) — The classic 12-14% Mn, 1.0-1.4% C Hadfield alloy for crusher jaws, railway crossings and earthmoving components uses MC FeMn for the bulk manganese charge.
Stainless Steel — Certain austenitic stainless grades use manganese as a partial nickel substitute (200 series) where MC FeMn provides the required Mn addition.
Comparison With HC and LC FeMn
HC FeMn (6-8% C) — Most cost-effective, for carbon steels where residual carbon is removed in subsequent refining. MC FeMn (1-2% C) — Intermediate cost, for grades where moderate carbon control is needed. LC FeMn (0.5% C max) — Premium price, for ultra-low carbon steels and stainless where any carbon addition is critical.
