Ferro Silicon Applications
Ferro Silicon is one of the most versatile and widely used ferro alloys in metallurgy with applications across steelmaking, cast iron production and semiconductor manufacturing:
Steel Deoxidation — FeSi is added to liquid steel after oxygen blowing to remove dissolved oxygen. Used in conjunction with aluminium deoxidation in fully killed steels.
Silicon Alloying Steel — Electrical steel (transformer core laminations, motor laminations) requires 0.5-4.5% silicon to improve magnetic permeability and reduce eddy current losses. FeSi 75 is the primary silicon source.
Cast Iron Inoculation — FeSi is added to molten cast iron just before pouring to nucleate graphite flakes (grey iron) or control graphite morphology (ductile iron). Critical for casting quality.
India's Ferro Silicon Production
India produces ferro silicon in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh — states with access to quartzite silica rock, coal and metallurgical coke. Indian FeSi producers range from small captive units to large industrial producers exporting to global steel markets.
Export destinations include South Korea, Japan, UAE, Turkey, Germany and Brazil. Indian FeSi is competitive with Chinese origin on price and quality, with the added advantage of reliable supply without the export restriction risk that periodically affects Chinese ferro alloy exports.
Higher Grades
FeSi 90 (Si 88-92%) is available for applications requiring higher silicon recovery or for use in magnesium production processes. Custom chemistry specifications for Al, Ca and Ba content are available for specialised inoculation applications in ductile iron foundries.
