SS 202 — India's Cost-Effective Stainless
SS 202 is the dominant stainless steel grade in the Indian domestic market and one of India's most significant stainless steel exports to developing markets. It belongs to the AISI 200 series austenitic stainless steels, which substitute manganese and nitrogen for a portion of the nickel found in conventional 300 series austenitic grades.
Since nickel is the most expensive alloying element in stainless steel (trading at $12,000-20,000/MT), the partial replacement with much cheaper manganese produces a significantly lower-cost austenitic stainless steel while retaining the fundamental austenitic microstructure that provides formability, weldability and basic corrosion resistance.

Applications of SS 202
Kitchenware and Utensils — The single largest application in India and export markets. Pots, pans, pressure cookers, plates, bowls, trays. SS 202's formability and lower cost make it the standard grade for mass-market kitchenware.
Domestic Appliances — Washing machine drums, dishwasher parts, refrigerator interior panels, microwave oven interior, range hood panels.
Architecture and Interior Design — Elevator panels, door frames, column cladding, decorative panels in shopping malls, hotels and commercial buildings in South Asia, Middle East and Africa.
Industrial Fabrication — Light-duty vessels, tanks and equipment in mildly corrosive environments.

SS 202 vs SS 304 — Corrosion Performance
SS 202 offers lower pitting corrosion resistance than SS 304 in chloride-containing environments. It is generally not suitable for outdoor coastal exposure, marine applications, food processing with salt brines or pharmaceutical manufacturing — applications where SS 304 or SS 316 must be specified. For indoor, non-marine environments with moderate corrosion exposure, SS 202 provides adequate performance at reduced cost.
