India's Aluminium Industry
India is the world's second-largest aluminium producer after China, home to large integrated primary aluminium smelters — Hindalco (Novelis parent), Vedanta (Balco, Jharsuguda) and National Aluminium Company (NALCO). These producers supply primary aluminium to downstream processors who produce alloy ingots, extrusion billets, rolled sheet and cast products to aerospace, automotive, construction and packaging industries.
India's aluminium export market has grown significantly, with alloy ingots exported to customers in Southeast Asia, Middle East, Europe and North America who use them as feedstock for die casting, sand casting, extrusion and rolling processes.
Alloy Selection Guide
6061-T6 — The most versatile aluminium alloy. Medium-high strength (UTS 310 MPa), excellent corrosion resistance, good machinability. Used in structural frames, marine fittings, automotive components and bicycle frames.
7075-T6 — Highest strength commercial aluminium alloy (UTS 572 MPa). Used in aerospace structures, sports equipment and high-strength fasteners where weight is critical.
5083-H116 — Excellent marine corrosion resistance. Used in shipbuilding, pressure vessels, cryogenic tankage and offshore structures.
6063-T5 — The extrusion alloy. Excellent surface finish and extrudability for architectural extrusions, window frames and heat sinks.
Die Casting Alloys
Secondary aluminium alloys for die casting — ADC12 (ASTM 380), LM6, LM24, A380 — are available from Indian secondary aluminium producers who produce these alloys from recycled aluminium scrap. Die casting alloys are widely used for automotive housings, consumer electronics enclosures and hardware.
