India's Copper Refining Industry
India is a significant copper producer, home to major electrolytic copper refineries that produce LME Grade A registered cathodes from imported copper concentrates. Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) is India's only integrated copper producer, while Hindalco (Birla Copper) and Vedanta (Sterlite Copper) have operated large custom smelter-refinery complexes producing cathodes at international quality standards.
LME Grade A registration ensures the copper cathode meets the London Metal Exchange's strict chemical purity requirements (Cu 99.99% min) and is eligible for delivery against LME copper futures contracts — the global price benchmark for copper.
Copper Cathode Uses
Copper Rod — Continuous cast copper rod (8mm ETP rod) is produced from cathode by upward continuous casting and is the primary feedstock for wire drawing into electrical cables and conductors — the largest single use of copper globally.
Brass and Bronze Production — Alloyed with zinc (brass) or tin (bronze) for engineering components, plumbing fittings and marine hardware.
Electronics — High-purity cathode grades are refined further for semiconductor and electronic applications.
Tube and Pipe — Rolled and drawn into copper tube for plumbing, HVAC and medical gas distribution.

Copper cathode is priced on an LME basis — typically quoted as LME cash settlement price plus or minus a physical premium/discount.
