ETP Copper Rod — The Backbone of the Electrical Industry
Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) copper rod is the world's most widely used copper semi-finished product. Produced by continuously casting molten copper into 8mm rod, ETP rod is the starting material for virtually all copper wire drawing — from large power cables down to fine magnet wire for electric motors.
The 8mm diameter is the global standard for copper rod used in wire drawing because it provides the optimal balance between coil weight (5-7 MT for economical handling), drawability in multi-die drawing machines, and compatibility with standard wire drawing equipment worldwide.
Applications of 8mm Copper Rod
Power Cable Manufacturing — Drawn to conductor sizes from 16mm2 to 630mm2 for low voltage, medium voltage and high voltage power cables.
Building Wire — Drawn to 1.5mm2 to 10mm2 insulated wiring for residential and commercial electrical installations.
Magnet Wire — Fine-drawn to 0.05mm to 2mm round and rectangular profiles for transformer windings, motor stator and rotor windings, solenoids and inductors.
Flexible Cables — Multi-wire bunched or stranded conductors for flexible power supply cables, appliance cords and automotive wiring harnesses.
Electrical Resistivity — The Critical Parameter
For electrical applications, copper rod resistivity is the single most critical quality parameter. ASTM B49 specifies a maximum resistivity of 0.017241 Ohm.mm2/m at 20 deg C (equivalent to minimum conductivity of 100% IACS). Our ETP rod consistently meets this specification, ensuring wire drawn from it meets the electrical performance requirements of international cable standards (IEC 60228, ASTM B1, BS 6360).
