India's Lead Production
India is among the world's top 10 lead producers, with Hindustan Zinc operating the integrated zinc-lead mining and smelting complex in Rajasthan as India's primary source of refined lead. Lead smelting is also practised by secondary lead producers from lead-acid battery recycling — India's automotive and industrial battery market generates substantial secondary lead from end-of-life battery processing.
Hindustan Zinc's SHG Lead (Pb 99.97%) is LME-registered and exported to battery manufacturers, chemical producers and industrial users globally.
Lead Applications
Lead-Acid Batteries — The dominant application, consuming approximately 80% of global lead production. Automotive starter batteries, industrial forklift batteries, UPS and telecom backup power, solar energy storage. Lead grids, oxides and alloys are all derived from refined lead ingots.
Radiation Shielding — Lead's high density (11.34 g/cm3) and high atomic number (Z=82) make it the most effective and economical radiation shielding material for X-ray rooms, nuclear facilities, gamma camera enclosures and industrial radiography equipment.
Chemical Applications — Lead compounds (lead oxide, lead acetate) used in pigments, stabilisers and specialty chemicals.
Cable Sheathing — Lead-sheathed cables for high-voltage underground and submarine power cables where moisture resistance is critical.
