What to Specify — Beyond Size

Grow bags are bought on dimensions, but dimensions are the easy part. The variables that determine whether they work in your system are the medium inside, the drainage configuration and the film.

Grow Bag Specification Checklist
ElementWhat to SpecifyWhy
MediumEC, pH, buffered or notDetermines crop performance
Fill ratioCoir / chips / fibre blendControls air-to-water balance
DimensionsLength × width × heightMust match your gutter or bench
DrainageNumber and position of holesWrong drainage waterlogs the root zone
FilmThickness, white outer / black innerReflects heat, blocks light and algae
Planting holesPre-cut or unslitPre-cut saves labour at planting

White outer film with black inner is standard for a reason: white reflects heat to keep the root zone cooler, black blocks light to prevent algae growth inside the bag. Single-colour film on either side compromises one of those.

The Medium Inside Is the Product

A grow bag is a delivery format. The coir inside is what your crop actually grows in, so the same EC and buffering questions that apply to loose coco peat apply here — and they are easier to overlook when you are buying a finished bag.

EC below 1.0 mS/cm
For sensitive and hydroponic crops
pH 5.5–6.8
Standard horticultural range
Buffered
Pre-loaded calcium for controlled feed
Sodium reported
Separately from EC on the COA
Blend ratio
Coir dust, chips and fibre to your spec
Air filled porosity
Higher chip content raises drainage

Ask for the COA on the medium, not just a bag specification. A bag can be dimensionally perfect and still fail because the coir inside was never properly washed.

On specifications: the figures above reflect standard industry specifications for this product. Your actual batch values are confirmed on a NABL-accredited Certificate of Analysis issued against your specific lot — provided with every shipment, and with sample orders before you commit to bulk. We do not ask buyers to take a specification on trust.

Buyer Questions

What should I specify when ordering coir grow bags?

Dimensions are the easy part. Specify the medium EC and whether it is buffered, the coir to chip to fibre blend ratio, exact dimensions to match your gutter or bench, the number and position of drainage holes, film thickness and colour, and whether planting holes should be pre-cut. Each of those affects whether the bag works in your system.

Why is grow bag film white outside and black inside?

White outer film reflects heat and keeps the root zone cooler, which matters in warm climates and under glass. Black inner film blocks light and prevents algae growing inside the bag. Single-colour film compromises one of those two functions, so the two-tone construction is standard for good reason.

Does the EC of the medium inside matter as much as in loose coco peat?

Exactly as much. A grow bag is a delivery format; the coir inside is what your crop grows in. Raw unwashed coir at high EC will damage sensitive crops whether it arrives loose or in a bag. Ask for the Certificate of Analysis on the medium, not just a bag dimension specification.

Should I order buffered grow bags?

If you run a controlled nutrient feed programme, yes. Buffering pre-loads calcium onto the coir exchange sites so the medium does not strip calcium and magnesium from your feed solution. Washed and buffered are two separate processes, and a bag described as washed may not be buffered.

Can grow bags be made to custom dimensions?

Yes. Dimensions, drainage hole count and position, film thickness and planting hole configuration are all made to your specification, since they need to match your existing gutters, benches or irrigation layout. Send your system details at enquiry stage.

Can I get samples before a bulk order?

Yes. Sample bags are supplied with the same Certificate of Analysis standard as bulk, so you can trial them in your own system and verify the medium EC, pH and sodium before committing to a container.
