What Are Coco Coir Chips?
Coco chips are chipped pieces of coconut husk used as a chunky, high-porosity growing medium. Their open structure holds air around the roots and breaks down slowly, making them ideal for epiphytic plants such as orchids, anthuriums and bromeliads, as well as reptile bedding and substrate blends.
Chips are frequently blended with coco peat to balance air and water in a single medium.
Grades and Formats
Coco chips are supplied as compressed blocks and bags. A 4 kg block measures roughly 29 × 29 × 10–12 cm and expands to about 48 litres, supplied at an electrical conductivity below 2 (1:5 ratio), pH 6–7 and moisture below 20%. A 50 L loose bag format is also available. Washed, lower-EC chips are available on request.
Smaller 2 kg and 650 g blocks suit retail and nursery packs.
Coco Chips vs Coco Peat
Coco chips and coco peat play complementary roles. Chips provide drainage and aeration through their coarse, chunky structure, while coco peat holds water and fine particles. Many growers blend the two to tune the air-to-water ratio for a specific crop or container.
The right ratio depends on plant type, climate and irrigation method.
Export Documentation and Compliance
Coir-based growing media are classed internationally as products of plant origin, so shipments are prepared to meet the biosecurity requirements of the destination country (for example USDA-APHIS, the EU and Australian authorities). Each consignment is accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate and the required fumigation or heat treatment.
Every shipment includes a certificate of analysis covering EC, pH and moisture, along with commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading.
