What is Coco Peat (Coir Pith)?
Coco peat — also called coir pith — is the spongy material extracted from the coconut husk during fibre processing. Once treated as a byproduct, it is now a leading renewable, biodegradable growing medium. It holds 800–1,000% of its dry weight in water, has a naturally mild pH in the 5.5–6.5 range and gives plant roots excellent aeration.
As environmental rules across Europe and the United Kingdom phase out sphagnum peat moss, coir pith has become the primary substitute substrate for horticulture, hydroponics and nursery production worldwide.
Compressed Blocks and Bulk Volumes
We supply coco peat as hydraulically compressed blocks for efficient container loading. A standard 5 kg block measures roughly 29 × 29 × 12 cm and expands to about 75 litres of moist growing medium on hydration. Smaller 1 kg (≈15 L), 2 kg (≈30 L) and 650 g (≈9 L) blocks are available for retail and nursery packs.
Compression maximises volume per container, making coco peat well suited to bulk and full-container-load export. Exact loadability and packing are confirmed per order.
Low-EC vs High-EC Grades
Coco peat is supplied in two broad grades. Low-EC buffered material is washed and calcium-buffered to remove naturally occurring salts, making it suitable for sensitive hydroponic and nursery crops; this grade is available on request. High-EC unwashed or partially washed material is used for field soil conditioning, animal bedding and landscaping, where precise salinity control is less critical.
The correct grade depends on your crop and system. Electrical conductivity, pH and moisture are confirmed by certificate of analysis for each shipment.
Export Documentation and Compliance
Coir-based growing media are classed internationally as products of plant origin, so shipments are prepared to meet the biosecurity requirements of the destination country (for example USDA-APHIS, the EU and Australian authorities). Each consignment is accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate and the required fumigation or heat treatment.
Every shipment includes a certificate of analysis covering EC, pH and moisture, along with commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading.
