Purity Grades — What the Numbers Mean

Cumin is traded by purity percentage — the proportion of clean seed after removing stems, dust and foreign seed. Machine-cleaned and sortex-graded lots command a premium because they need no further cleaning at destination.

Cumin Purity Grades
GradePurityBest For
Singapore 9999% / 99.5%Retail packing, premium spice brands
Europe 9999% machine cleanedEU food manufacturing, grinding
Sortex Cleaned99.5%+Direct use, no further cleaning needed
Standard 9898%Bulk grinding, oleoresin extraction

State the purity grade and whether you need sortex-cleaned material at enquiry stage — it materially affects price and whether you can use the seed as received.

Typical Specifications

Cumin is one of the spices most frequently stopped at EU borders on pesticide grounds. A full residue screen is not optional for European shipments.

Buyer Questions

What does Singapore 99 cumin actually mean?

Singapore 99 is a trade grade denoting 99 percent purity — that is, 99 percent clean cumin seed after removal of stems, dust and foreign seed. It is the grade normally specified for retail packing and premium spice brands. Europe 99 is a comparable purity but machine cleaned to a specification suited to EU food manufacturing.

Do I need sortex-cleaned cumin?

If you intend to pack or use the seed without further cleaning, yes. Sortex cleaning uses optical sorting to remove discoloured seed and residual foreign matter, typically taking purity to 99.5 percent or above. If you operate your own cleaning line, a standard machine-cleaned grade may be more economical.

Why is cumin frequently rejected at EU borders?

Pesticide residue. Cumin is among the spices most often flagged under EU Maximum Residue Limits set by EC 396/2005. A full GC-MS and LC-MS screen against EU MRLs before shipment is the only reliable protection, and the result should appear on your batch Certificate of Analysis.

What volatile oil content should cumin have?

Typical dried cumin seed carries 2.5 to 3.5 percent volatile oil, which drives the characteristic aroma. Buyers producing ground cumin or extracting oleoresin generally specify the volatile oil figure, since it directly affects yield and flavour strength in the finished product.

What HS code applies to cumin seeds?

Cumin seeds neither crushed nor ground are exported from India under HS Code 0909.31. Crushed or ground cumin falls under HS Code 0909.32. We declare the correct code on all shipping documents.

Can I get a sample with a COA before bulk?

Yes. Sample orders carry the same NABL-accredited Certificate of Analysis standard as bulk shipments, so you can verify purity, volatile oil and pesticide results against your own requirements before committing.
