Idukki — India's Cardamom Capital
Green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is indigenous to India's Western Ghats and the Idukki district of Kerala remains the world's premier growing region. Indian green cardamom is botanically and aromatically distinct from Guatemalan cardamom — the dominant global origin by volume — with higher volatile oil content, more complex eucalyptol-rich aroma and the authentic 'true cardamom' flavour demanded by premium buyers in the Gulf, Scandinavia and specialty food markets globally.
Indian cardamom commands a significant price premium over Guatemalan origin, reflecting its superior quality and limited supply from the Kerala highlands.
Grades Available
Extra Bold (8mm+) — The most premium grade. Large uniform pods, highest volatile oil. Preferred by Saudi, UAE and Kuwaiti buyers for traditional cardamom coffee and luxury gifting.
Bold (7mm+) — Premium commercial grade. Most widely exported. Preferred by EU food manufacturers and North American specialty retailers.
Medium (6mm+) — Standard commercial grade for blending applications.
Key Markets
Saudi Arabia and UAE are the world's largest per-capita consumers of cardamom driven by Arabic coffee culture. Scandinavia (Sweden, Finland, Norway) have significant culinary traditions using cardamom in baking. Germany, UK and USA are growing specialty food markets.
