India's Wheat Production and Export
India is the world's second-largest wheat producer after China, with annual production of 100–110 million metric tonnes. The primary wheat-growing states are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh — known collectively as India's wheat belt. Punjab and Haryana produce the premium quality wheat preferred for export due to higher protein content and test weight.
Indian wheat is competitive for buyers in neighbouring markets — Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines and Sub-Saharan Africa — where proximity significantly reduces freight costs compared to Australian, Black Sea or North American origins.
Grades and Quality
Indian export wheat is available as FAQ (Fair Average Quality) grade meeting standard moisture, foreign matter and protein specifications. Premium food-grade wheat with minimum 11% protein and 76+ kg/hl test weight is available in select seasons from Punjab and Haryana origin for buyers with higher quality requirements.
Ports and Loading
Major loading ports for Indian wheat: Kandla (Gujarat) for western origin, Chennai and Krishnapatnam for southern origin. Vessel sizes up to Panamax handled at Kandla and Chennai. Container loading available from Nhava Sheva, Mundra and Krishnapatnam for smaller parcels.
Documentation
Phytosanitary Certificate (Plant Quarantine Authority), Certificate of Analysis, Certificate of Origin (FIEO), SGS/BV weight and quality certificate for vessel shipments, Commercial Invoice, Packing List and Bill of Lading.
