Grain Length and Grade — What You Are Actually Buying

Basmati 1121 is bought on grain length, and length is measured two ways. Average Grain Length (AGL) is measured on raw milled rice; Cooked Grain Length is what your customer sees on the plate. Specify AGL — it is the enforceable figure.

1121 Grade Reference
GradeAvg Grain LengthBrokenTypical Use
Extra Long Grain8.30mm+Max 1–2%Premium retail, HORECA, gifting packs
Long Grain7.50–8.29mmMax 2–5%Standard retail, food service
Sortex CleanPer gradeMax 1%Direct packing, no further cleaning
Steam / SellaPer gradeMax 2%Parboiled — higher yield, non-sticky

Cooked grain length for 1121 typically reaches 18–20mm, which is what gives it the presentation premium over other varieties. Ask for both figures on the specification sheet.

Raw, Steam or Sella — Which to Order

The same paddy produces three very different products depending on processing. This choice affects cooking behaviour, yield and price more than grade does.

On specifications: the figures above reflect standard industry specifications for this product. Your actual batch values are confirmed on a NABL-accredited Certificate of Analysis issued against your specific lot — provided with every shipment, and with sample orders before you commit to bulk. We do not ask buyers to take a specification on trust.

Buyer Questions

What makes Basmati 1121 different from other basmati varieties?

1121 is prized for exceptional grain elongation. Average raw grain length reaches 8.30mm and above in the extra long grade, and cooked grain length typically reaches 18 to 20mm. That elongation is what creates the visual premium on the plate, and it is the main reason 1121 commands higher prices than shorter basmati varieties.

What is the difference between raw, steam and sella basmati?

Raw or white basmati is simply milled and polished. Steam basmati is steam treated before milling, which firms the grain and reduces breakage. Golden sella is parboiled, giving the highest cooking yield and a non-sticky grain with a golden tint, favoured for bulk catering. White sella is parboiled then whitened for a non-sticky grain with white appearance.

Should I specify average grain length or cooked grain length?

Specify average grain length, measured on raw milled rice. It is the objective, testable figure that can be verified on arrival and enforced under contract. Cooked grain length is useful marketing information but varies with cooking method, so it is difficult to hold a supplier to.

What HS code applies to basmati rice?

Basmati rice is exported from India under HS Code 1006.30, covering semi-milled or wholly milled rice. Basmati is a GI registered product, and APEDA registration is mandatory for exporters. We declare the correct code on all shipping documents.

Can varietal authenticity be verified?

Yes. DNA testing for varietal purity is available on request and is sometimes required by buyers in regulated markets or where a contract specifies a maximum admixture of other varieties. Standard specification allows up to 5 percent admixture; tighter tolerances can be agreed at order stage.

Can I get a sample with a COA before bulk?

Yes. Sample orders carry the same NABL-accredited Certificate of Analysis standard as bulk shipments, so you can verify grain length, moisture, broken percentage and pesticide results against your own requirements before committing.
