Stainless Steel Export from India: SS 304, 316 & 202 Buyer's Guide

India is one of the world's leading stainless steel producers and exporters. Jindal Stainless Limited — headquartered in India — is Asia's largest stainless steel manufacturer, producing over 1.9 million tonnes annually. Indian stainless steel is exported to over 100 countries and is fully compliant with ASTM, EN and JIS standards. This guide covers the key grades, finishes and buying considerations for international importers.

Key Stainless Steel Grades Exported from India

SS 304 / 304L (UNS S30400 / S30403) is the most widely used stainless steel grade globally — the standard "18/8" austenitic grade with 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It offers excellent forming and welding characteristics, good corrosion resistance and is available in the widest range of products, forms and finishes. 304L is the low-carbon variant, preferred for welded fabrications to avoid sensitisation.

SS 316 / 316L (UNS S31600 / S31603) is the marine and chemical grade, with molybdenum addition (2–3%) that gives it superior corrosion resistance particularly in chloride environments. 316L is preferred in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food processing and marine applications. It commands a significant premium over SS 304 due to higher nickel and molybdenum content.

SS 202 (UNS S20200) is a high-manganese austenitic grade that uses manganese and nitrogen to partially replace nickel, making it more cost-effective than 304. Popular in architectural, decorative and utensil applications. Widely produced and exported from India at competitive pricing.

Surface Finishes Available

Indian stainless steel is available in a full range of mill finishes. No. 1 (1D) is hot rolled, annealed and pickled — rough matte surface, used for industrial applications. 2B is cold rolled, annealed and skin-passed — smooth reflective finish, the most commonly specified for general fabrication. BA (Bright Annealed) is bright mirror-like finish, produced by annealing in controlled atmosphere. No. 4 is a brushed satin finish widely used in architectural and food service equipment.

Sizing and Form

Sheets are typically available in 1000mm × 2000mm, 1220mm × 2440mm and 1500mm × 3000mm with thickness 0.3mm to 100mm. Coils are available in widths from 100mm to 2000mm. Custom cut-to-size is available with standard lead times of 7–14 working days ex-stock for common grades and sizes. All material is supplied with full ASTM A240 mill test certificates from the originating mill.

Mill Origin and Traceability

Zenvico Global supplies Jindal Stainless origin material as the primary source — India's largest and most internationally recognised SS producer. Material is also available from SAIL (Steel Authority of India) origin for specific grades. Every shipment comes with original mill test certificates, heat number traceability, and SGS or Bureau Veritas weight and dimension verification at the port of loading on request.

Documentation for SS Exports

Standard documentation includes Commercial Invoice and Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin (FIEO), ASTM A240 Mill Test Certificate with full chemical and mechanical properties, SGS/BV inspection report, and Radiation Certificate where required by the importing country. For EU buyers, a EUR.1 or REX declaration is provided for preferential duty claims where applicable under trade agreements.
